Now we are trying to escape Belo Horizonte, and our baser instincts. But the women, all
wearing backless shirts and tight jeans, are not making it easy. "Come with us to a
bar," their leader implores in Portuguese. "hy not stay an extra day?"
she says, with a pleading look. The three of us are unshaven, we stink of last night's whiskey, and we've slept a total of seven hours in two
nights. We need to return to our apartment in Rio and our healthy regimen of
beach-gym-beach. But, of course, we decide to stay another night.
I moved to Rio from New York with an
American friend, Rodrigo Prieto, because we both wanted to take a break from the grind of
our sixty-hour weeks, mine as a magazine editor and Rodrigo's as a
banker. We wanted an adventure. We wanted to learn a new language. And yes, we wanted to
live among the most beautiful women in the world.
