At first, Madonna's charm was that she looked like everyone else, wore the same slutty gear and torn jeans you might have seen anywhere in downtown (or way uptown) Manhattan and, if she wasn’t fat, she looked like she was supposed to be. She was one of us, back then. Cyndi Lauper, for a time, accomplished a similar feat: her Queens accent and Betty Boop persona were calculated to intimidate no one. Did nothing in popular culture do a betterjob of transcend ing those dark days? Was there nothing going on besides the amassing of large corporate fortunes and the floating of junk bonds?Well, there was the gathering storm of the American indie-rock movement. It was in 1984, for example, that the Minutemen released Double Nickles on the Dime and Husker Dü put out Zen Arcade and their searing recording of Roger McGuinn’s “Eight Miles High.”An ineffable something about these records seemed to repair the broken promise of rock & roll. They grabbed you and demanded that you listen to, for example, Bob Mould’s wailing at the end of “Eight Miles High,” which histrionics suggested a last-chance attempt to rescue the enlightenment of the mid- ‘60s (when the Byrds had first record ed the tune)—just as they simultaneously doomed that idealism to the scrapheap of history.
